2011 Golf Classic Wrap-up!

This year's Frank McDonald Memorial Golf Classic marked another successful tournament turnout, bringing together more than 40 teams for a fun and competitive day of golf at the Honors Course on October 10th. The fall tournament date was a welcomed change to the event, with generally overcast conditions and a crisp autumn breeze ensuring milder playing conditions for the golfers.

A highlight of the 2011 year was reaching the monumental $1 million mark in contributions combined over the 13 year history of the classic. This celebrated benchmark honors the tremendous effort and dedication of those who have contributed to the continued success of the tournament.

"We are extremely pleased to reach this milestone goal for the tournament," said returning Classic Committee Chairman Mike Jenkins from Unum. "This would not have been possible without the participation of the players and support from our primary sponsors. We are very appreciative for the level of dedication each player and sponsor has brought to the tournament growth throughout the years."

Mike also stated his appreciate for the leadership and staff at the Honors Course: "Henrik Simenson, Ashton Harris and their staff were invaluable to the success of this year's tournament, and we are tremendously grateful for the opportunity to host this event at the Honors each year."

The Classic also raked in a record number of donations for the 2011 year, totaling over $100,000 - a $20,000+ increase from the previous year. Proceeds for the tournament are contributed to the United Way of Greater Chattanooga to help fund community programs that advance the common good and build a stronger, healthier community.

Sponsors from the tournament were The Chattanooga Times Free Press, Coca-Cola, Bi-Lo, and Chattem, as well as Budweiser of Chattanooga and Kelly Auto Group. Also key to the success of the tournament were Classic committee members Gary Davis and Ryan May of Coca-Cola, Tanya Williamson from The Chattanooga Times Free Press, Mike Jenkins and Tom White from Unum, Mickey McCarnish, and Bill Webb.

Golfing in the Good Ol' Summertime!

It was a hot and muggy day, but it still beat a day at the office! That was the general feeling about the 2010 edition of the United Way Frank McDonald Memorial Golf Classic, held this year on August 10 at the Honors. Nearly 40 teams sweated their way through one of the toughest courses in the country and lived to tell about it! The tournament, normally held the last Monday of April, was bumped to August due to the NCAA finals earlier in the summer.

It was a tremendous year, despite the heat! All totalled, the tournament raised more than $88,000 this year, an increase of nearly $15,000 over the year previous. Proceeds from the tournament are contributed to United Way of Greater Chattanooga to help fund community programs that advance the common good and build a stronger, healthier community.

First year tournament chairman Mike Jenkins from Unum was appreciative of the support United Way received from tournament sponsors.

"This tournament would not happen without the tremendous support we receive from our primary sponsors, The Chattanooga Times Free Press, Coca Cola and BI-LO," Mike said. "We also thank Kelley Automotive Group for donating our hole-in-one prizes. We are also pleased to welcome Chattem as an official sponsor. They have supported the tournament over the years and this was a tremendous next step in their level of support."

Mike also thanked the tournament committee members -- Gary Davis and Ryan May of Coca Cola, Tanya Williamson from the Chattanooga Times Free Press, Tom White from Unum, Curtis Johnson, Mickey McCamish, Bill Webb.

"The support of the staff of the Honors Course was the key in making this event a success," continued Mike. "Henrik Simonsen, Ashton Harris and their staffs were outstanding. We cannot thank them and The Honors enough for their generosity in hosting this event each year."

Tournament Tops 40 Teams!

The Frank McDonald Memorial Golf Classic has reached the 40 team mark this year! Thanks to all who have returned to play the Honors one more time and to those who will be first-timers to the tournament. We're happy to report that 35 teams have signed up for the Classic this year, five more than the total number of teams participating last year! So who won the NCAA?

Everything's on go for the 2010 United Way Frank McDonald Memorial Golf Classic August 9. Don't know if you've kept up with the reason you'll be playing on August 9 and not the last Monday of April, as usual. If not, then check out the Augusta State Jaguars, winners of the 2009/10 NCAA National Golf Championship, which was held at the Honors in June. The Jags trounced runner-up Oklahoma State in a tightly fought battle that went to extra holes. Read a rundown of the matchup here. Maybe your round will be just as exciting as theirs!

Classic moves to August 9 to make room for the NCAA

This year, the United Way Frank McDonald Memorial Golf Classic moves from it's usual date (the last Monday in April) to Monday, August 9th. This is due to scheduling conflicts arising from the NCAA Division I Golf Championship which will be held at the Honors June 1-6. We fully expect to be back on track for April next year. In the meantime, check out the NCAAs and see how your game stacks up against the best in the collegiate ranks! If you would like to follow the progress of the NCAA regionals as teams embark on the road to Ooltewah, check out the official NCAA championship website.

There may not have been as many golfers on the course as usual, but it's safe to say that everyone who was there had an outstanding tournament experience at the 11th annual United Way Frank McDonald Memorial Golf Classic. A decent breeze and picture-perfect weather enhanced an already-manicured 18 holes at The Honors on April 27. Thirty teams challenged the course, with some faring better than others, but all having a memorable day on the course!

GMC Truck is safe for another year

No one drove away in the GMC Sierra Hybrid offered by sponsor Kelly Auto Group, with many golfers blaming the pin placement. Whatever the reason, United Way thanks Kelly for again sponsoring the hole-in-one contest prizes for the tournament.

Incredible service!

The professional staff at the Honors provided impeccible service throughout the day, including exquisite course conditions and some sumptuous treats for the awards luncheon and evening reception. Thanks to Club Pro Henrik Simonsen and his staff of assistants and caddies, and also to Club Manager Ashton Harris and his crew for their hospitality.

After 10 years, another great Classic!

After 10 years of the United Way Frank McDonald Memorial Golf Classic, the more things changed, the more they stayed the same. There were some new faces at the Honors as well as some new amenities, like an expanded patio. But no matter what changes, the experience is always the same -- excellent!

For only the third time in the 10-year history of the Classic, weather was a factor in the morning round. The day started soggy, delaying the first round shotgun by an hour. Once the round started, however, the day did a weather-180 and finished sunny and mild. Nearly 180 golfers challenged the prestigious Honors Course for the benefit of United Way of Greater Chattanooga. Golfers were again treated to a fantastic lunch reception and a sumptuous reception that included prime rib, gulf shrimp and an array of fine desserts. The entire event was sponsored for the 10th year by the Chattanooga Times Free Press, Chattanooga Coca-Cola Bottling Company and BI-LO.

Led by new course professional, Henrik Simonsen, who just recently joined the Honors, the staff put together another seamless golf experience for the players. Gorgeous fairways and amenable greens greeted golfers as the course shook off over two inches of rain the night before. Besides great course conditions, golfers were showered with an array of door prizes from our sponsors.

Great results!

After the numbers were crunched, the 10th annual Classic raised a hefty $83,000 to benefit the work of United Way of Greater Chattanooga. As usual, 100% of that will go right back into the community to help prepare children for success in school, help families build stable lives and support the most vulnerable.

No Ace this Year

No one scored an ace on any of the par-threes this year, meaning the GMC Yukon Hybrid and other great prizes provided by sponsor Kelly Auto Group are safe for another year. Jon Williams of Golf Headquarters put together another fantastic array of tee favors for the participants this year.
